There are plenty of great reasons to start dating — like wanting to share your life with someone or being ready to grow together. But not every reason is a good one. Sometimes, we jump into dating for reasons that can lead to more harm than good. Let’s take a closer look at some of the not-so-great or downright bad reasons to start dating and why it’s worth waiting for the right time.
1. You're Feeling Lonely
Everyone feels lonely sometimes. It’s easy to think that having a partner will fix that feeling. But a relationship can’t fill a hole in your heart that only you (and God) can fill. When you look for someone else to make you happy, you put a lot of pressure on them and the relationship. Instead, try to build strong friendships and learn to enjoy your own company. Remember, true satisfaction comes from God. As it says in Philippians 4:12-13, "I have learned the secret of being content in any and every situation... I can do all this through him who gives me strength."
2. All Your Friends Are in Relationships
It can feel like you're being left out when all your friends are coupled up. You might feel pressure to find someone just to fit in. But dating because of peer pressure isn't fair to you or the person you date. Your path is your own, and it's okay if it looks different from your friends' paths.
Here are some things to remember:
Your worth isn't based on your relationship status.
It's better to be single than in a relationship for the wrong reasons.
Focus on what makes you happy, not what everyone else is doing.
3. You're Trying to Get Over an Ex
A breakup can be really tough. It’s tempting to jump into a new relationship to forget the pain or to show your ex that you've moved on. This is often called a "rebound" relationship, and it usually ends up causing more hurt. You need time to heal from a past relationship before you can start a new one with a clear heart. Give yourself the space to process your feelings and grow from the experience.
4. You're Feeling Bored
Life can sometimes feel a bit slow, and dating might seem like a fun way to add some excitement. But using someone else for entertainment is not a kind or respectful way to start a relationship. A person is not a hobby to pick up when you're bored. Relationships are about genuine connection and care, not just passing the time. Instead of looking for a person to cure your boredom, try finding a new hobby, volunteering, or spending time with friends and family.
It's About Why You Start
Dating can be a wonderful thing when you're doing it for the right reasons. Taking the time to understand your own heart before you give it to someone else is a sign of wisdom and strength. When you're whole on your own, you'll be ready to share your life with someone in a healthy, loving way.
